And insurance-billed bone-density scans can arrive as a bill weeks later, with a facility fee and a separate reading fee you never saw coming.

What you actually get for the price. A DEXA scan is a precise, ten-minute measurement — the same method used in clinical and research settings. A DEXA scan uses a very low dose of radiation — an effective dose of roughly 1 to 5 µSv on our GE Lunar Prodigy, about the same as 3 to 15 hours of ordinary background radiation, and a small fraction of a chest X-ray or a transatlantic flight. As a precaution, scans aren’t performed during pregnancy. More than the scan itself, what you’re paying for is a measurement done properly and read by a physician who reviews it with you — not a printout handed over without context, and not a report generated by software alone.
